Flood hits thousands people in Dhemaji, Assam-Incessant rains for last many days at the upper reaches of neighbouring Arunachal Pradesh have caused flash floods in Dhemaji district, where over 25,000 people are affected. Continuous rains for the last two weeks in the region inundated vast riverine areas of the subdivision and damaged about 500 hectares of standing crops at Berachapori area of Bahir-Jonai and Rangpuria of Simenchapori panchayats.Surging waters of Jiadhal river have caused flash floods in West Dhemaji. The most affected villages are Kechukhana, Lowmuri, Misamari, Naruathan, Ghuguha among others.Sources from civil administration here informed that about 5300 people are affected by the flood. The overflowing waters of mighty Brahmaputra and its tributary Lali river last night flooded two sites and inundated 19 villages. “Relief materials for 686 affected families besides cattle feed are kept ready for distribution after having primary assessment report. Officials of circle office besides medical and veterinary team have been engaged to monitor and mitigate the situation”, Jonai SDO Arpan Kr Saikia informed The Assam Tribune this evening. Lali river has breached the dyke at Berachapori portion this morning, submerged vast areas in Berachapori, Sonowal Katoni, Machua Camp, Tari Majgaon , Beramilon, Rohitpur Deori, Kerker and Nalinipam. The flash flood also damaged the PMGSY road being constructed from Okland to Tarigaon, breached at several portions within its span of 3 km,worst affected villages are Berachapori, Beramilon and Tari Majgaon of Bahir-Jonai. No casualty has been reported. Tezpur the river bank erosion and formation of three new channels of the river Jia-Bharali at Rajbharal, Krokani and Dikoriajan under Tezpur subdivision, have become major threat to Tezpur town along with Tezpur University, SSB Camp, Debendranagar and Air Force Station. The flood water of Jia-Bharali river has inundated Rajbharal, Korokani, Dikoraijan, Samdhara and Bihiagaon of Tezpur subdivision. The river shifted almost 1 km from original position at Dikoraijan village causing threat to the flood protection measure , the earth embankment at Dikoraijan. If this embankment at Dikoraijan erodes then a part of Tezpur town, TU, SSB camp and Air force Station will be inundated.
