Future Scenario models for Delhi

Exhibition of Future Scenario models for Delhi Press Release Invitation for Press Conference on Saturday, 7 May To conclude phase I of the Delhi 2050 *, four future scenarios for Delhi in the year 2050 will be launched for public viewing on 7 May 2011 at Indira Gandhi National Center for Arts at 11:30 AM. What will be the fate of holy Yamuna in 2050? Will electricity get cheaper by 2050 with increasing dependence on renewable sources of energy? Will Delhi extend to Jaipur by 2050? The four scenarios investigate the metropolis of Delhi in varying details as: 1. LIFE Street – Right of way! Delhi 2050 is visualized as a city in which all citizens are equal and the street belongs to the people not the cars. It shows an example of completely reworking a street (Khirki) in order to have access for all, no boundaries, improved safety and lower crime rates. 2. URBAN Harvest – Decentralized Model A city which harvests energy, water, food to fulfil their requirements and also where the surplus is fed back into the grid. It looks at self-sustainability through urban agriculture, water harvesting and renewable energy sources. 3. CULTURE Loop – Heart Delhi City in 2050 is an amalgamation of heritage and contemporary culture. It also becomes one of the largest cultural city parks of the world that will be a prominent tourist destination. This scenario looks at giving the heart of the city back to the citizens by opening up heritage areas for public cultural purposes and by creating pedestrian friendly green corridors. 4. HUB-itat – Trade City This scenario reflects how the city can accommodate and adapt to the economic growth which is exponentially increasing. It suggests dramatic increase of public transport and thus creating high economic activities at the new hubs or nodes. Long term visionary thinking for city planning and growth is a standard practice in The Netherlands along with the conceptual Dutch design approach. India on the other hand has a unique knowledge embedded with traditional techniques. Indian expertise comes together with the Dutch design method underlined in Delhi 2050. Through series of discussions and engaging workshops during DELHI 2050 public days earlier in March, threats and opportunities for the future of Delhi were highlighted. Housewives, young professionals, school children and artists participated to initiate new-thinking for Delhi in the year 2050. Inputs from these multiple dialogues, feedback through the website and the research have been assimilated, documented and filtered by arch i** team to formulate four future scenarios for Delhi. “When we work on a city, we work on a patient (that is)...not under anaesthesia”. Ton Venhoeven, Dutch Expert Delhi 2050, Chief Government Advisor on Infrastructure in The Netherlands “We have to realize the fragility of our existence. Not only natural disasters, but manmade disasters pose even bigger threat in the coming years”. Iftikhar-Mulk Chishti, Professor School of Planning & Architecture “As the percentage of middle class people in Delhi is constantly rising, the consumption will also increase tremendously. In the future, we need to think how the city will meet the rising demands."- Ashok B. Lall, Architect, Principal A. B. Lall & Associates The scenarios are represented in the form of architectural models made using waste or reusable products like newspapers, cardboards, wires, packaging materials etc. The models will be on public display in the city as a mobile cart exhibition from 9th to 15th May as per the schedule.
