January 10, 2011, New Delhi : History was chronicled when Punjab virtually took over the entire world as World Punjabi Parliamentarians came together on one platform and joined hands to launch of First World Punjabi Parliamentarian Forum (WPPF) at convention hall, Hotel Ashok, Chankyapuri New Delhi on Friday night, 7th Jan, 2011. The Forum was formed under aegis of World Punjabi Organisation (WPO) having over 20 chapters worldwide.
Shri I.K. Gujral, Former Prime Minister of India inaugurated the Forum through a video message to the august gathering as could not come in person due to his frail health. “I applaud Vikramjit and his team on this occasion and I hope this Forum will go a long way in uniting MPs of Indian origin to their motherland” said I.K. Gujral.
“We need to engage Members of Parliaments of Indian Origin across the globe to help strengthen, enhance and promote cultural, social, economic and trade relationships between their country of residence and India,” said Vikramjit Sahney, Padma Shri and President, WPO.
Dr. Ruby Dhalla; Baroness Sandip Verma; Kanwaljit Bakshi; Daljit Dhaliwal, Lord Diljit Rana were among over 25 parliamentarians from various countries present on the occasion that spanned from Canada to U.K. to New Zealand to Malaysia with their solidarity to the forum. On the Indian side, the unity and patronage could well be seen with participation of Union Ministers and Parliamentarians from various political parties that included, amongst others, Dr. M.S. Gill, S.S. Dhindsa, O.P. Chautala, Raj Babar & S.S. Ahluwalia. Due to fog prevailing over the city, many MPs could not land in the city and made their presence felt through their messages to the audience.
On this occassion, Cine star, Dharmendra was conferred with award of “Punjabi Ratan” in the presence of parliamentarians from all over the globe as Sunny and Bobby Deol rejoiced in the moment of pride and the crowd jived to the song “Mein Jat Yamla Pagla Diwana, O Rabba, Itni si Baat Na Jaana....” playing in the background that rocked the Nation years ago and has not lost its magic spell even today!
