I fully understand the FUNCTIONING of TATA GROUP based on my own experience of over 40 years on STUDY of Tata Companies and was writing about it in past also.
Tata Group SPECIALIZED in Seeking FAVORS, BEGGING for Subsidies, Collaborations, UNMATCHED for 150 years, only overshadowed by AMBANI & ADANI recently. Ratan Tata was first in BEGGARS Queue for Government Favors. SINGUR, SANAND – VSNL is Ultimate -- Acquired ‘International Telecom Gateway’ for Rs.2000 Cr with Land Worth Rs.50,000 Cr, TATACOMM RANKS 7th IN SUBSCRIBER SHARE 6% ONLY - though had all the technologies.
When BIRLA Group was getting license for Second Hand Car Plant – TATA MOTORS - India sales $7b only was getting to Collaborate with MERCEDES for Trucks – Scores of other Foreign Collaborations Worldwide – Yet TM Indian Operations recorded 20% Loss of Revenue in last 4 Years while foreign operations resulted in 120% Growth in Revenue.
TERI started in 1974 WAS TOTALLY SCAMMED INSTITUTION – 42 years had yet to Develop A Commercially Significant Product for India – For a Product TERI May Have Collaborated or Secured FUNDS with/from 20-50 Foreign Companies & Countries – WASTED $Billions.
Cyrus Mistry, Civil Engineer tried to run Tata Companies Professionally, Unlike Ratan Tata was not seeking or Begging for Favors like Free or Subsidized Land close to state capitals and $billions in Tax Concessions so was different than Ratan Tata on these two counts.
Ratan Tata is BSc Architecture was UNFIT for Engineering Industry – i.e. Air Intake of NANO is just inches above ground level, water could enter Air Intake on any rainy day. Ratan Tata’s Dream NANO CAR was most LUNATIC. Its front wheels are small, Windows are inclined – Rear Seat is High above ground level to accommodate rear engine. Wheels have three bolts against 4-5 in most cars. It was ECCENTIC Product but Ratan Tata invested in new Factories first at Singur and now at Sanand even before Trail /Commercial launch.
My first introduction to Tata product was at BST in 1974 which converted Steel Strips into Steel Pipes and Tata steel strips were better in quality than strips supplied by Rourkela & Bokaro steel PSUs but was inferior in quality to East Europeans and Japanese steels.
In 1975 I noticed ‘Tata Robin Fraser’ Coal Handing plant was Inferior in design & performance. I offered to improve TRF plant to JRD Tata who acknowledge it but did nothing. TATA also had STEEL TUBE Mills – I had new Technologies for every problem.
In 1980 India imported 80,000 Ford Trucks with 6000 CC Engine – same as Tata Trucks based on Mercedes Truck technology. In about 25 years Tata Motors didn’t invest in R&D.
Ford Trucks would carry 50% more Load – Run 50% faster and gave 50% more mileage.

105 Years Tata Power Progressed to $3b Worth Today
Tata Power has an installed generation capacity of 10477 MW in India. The thermal power generation capacity stands at 7435 MW, while generation through clean sources such as hydro, solar, and wind stand at 3042 MW.
As Can Be Seen in CEA report TATA HYDRO generation was only 1,098 MU compared to BBMB 11,818 MU but O&M Expenses Charged by TATA POWER in Tariff order was more than BBMB which operates over 2884 MW Capacity to 447 for TATA HYDRO.
TATA HYDRO WAS GETTING BOGUS AWARDS
Tata Power acquired Delhi Distribution License in 2002 – promised to reduce T&D Losses from about 50% to 17% in 5 Years – but in run up to privatization Power Tariff were increased 80% from Rs.1 Per Unit to Rs.1.80 Per Unit in two steps yet T&D Losses increased from about 41% to 50% - most of the losses were RECOVERED in first three months – NDPL hired RECOVERY AGENTS, METER TESTING & READING TEAMS – Collection, Billing, Metering Efficiency was 100% but under declare SALES FABRICATED THEFT CASES EXTORTED CONSUMERS to Pay 405 Times Normal Monthly Bills, Installed FAST Meters etc.
PRIVATISATION OF POWER DISTRIBUTION had not advanced since then.
TATA POWER failed to get SASAN & other Power Projects in MP from where it could sell power to any state in India – opted for MUNDRA project in Remotest Location at Kutchh in Gujarat. Which SASAN pithead units operated at 91% in MP, ADANI operated at 81.3% but UMPP of Tata at 73% or [67.5% as AR of TPL] both at Mundra in Kutchh district.
