New Delhi – Holding signs emblazoned with graphic images of sacrificially slaughtered animals and with blood running down their hands, activists from India’s animal protection community will gather outside the Nepal embassy in New Delhi for a spirited protest against Nepal';s Gadhimai Festival. This is a festival that occurs every 5 years and involves the ritual sacrifice of hundreds of thousands of animals – the single largest animal sacrifice in the world. It is estimated some 500,000 water buffalo, goats, pigs, chickens, pigeons, and mice will be killed during the festival next month.
The animals slaughtered for the Gadhimai Festival have their throats slit or are decapitated. Despite worldwide opposition to the event, the government of Nepal has continued to allow the slaughter.
