National Green Tribunal
The
National Green Tribunal (NGT) has been established on 18.10.2010. The
Tribunal has been established for effective and expeditious disposal of
cases relating to environmental protection and conservation of forests
and other natural resources including enforcement of any legal right
relating to environment and giving relief and compensation for damages
to persons and property and for matters connected therewith or
incidental thereto.
A total of 5950 cases relating to environment and forests issues were pending in various courts across the country as on 1.1.2009.
The Tribunal’s dedicated jurisdiction in environment and forest matters shall provide speedy environmental justice. The Tribunal is mandated to make an endeavour for disposal of applications or appeals finally within 6 months of filing of the same.
The Minister of State gave this information for Environment and Forests (independent charge) Shrimati Jayanthi Natarajan in a written reply to a question by Shri Ishwar Singh in Rajya Sabha today
