Batik art technology generates employment in Assam

Batik designing technology of cloth from Far East has reached Barak valley of Assam and it is generating employment in the rural districts of Hylakandi and Cachar, thanks to Gurudev RabindraNath Tagore, whose 150th birth anniversary is being commemorated throughout the world. Santiniketan and Sriniketan of West Bengal have become famous for this far eastern art ‘batik’ product as well during last eight decades.

Batik is a process of decorating cloth by covering a part of it with a coat of natural wax and then dyeing the cloth. The process as well as the ingredients used both are very simple. On the other hand, colourful ‘Batik’ prints for home furnishings as well as garments are of great demand in both domestic and international markets.

Tagore never visited Barak Valley of South Assam. But, former students of Santiniketan and Sriniketan who originally hailed from this valley have now come back to introduced this art in the rural districts of Hylakandi and Cachar of Barak Valley in the state of Assam.

During this puja festivity, batik products got high demand in the local market of Barak valley as well. Its employment generation potential is also being projected as very promising in near future.
