Team India of Netball has been training hard and has made giant strides following funding from the Sports Authority of India and the Government of India.
7th Asian Youth Netball Championship to be held from 3rd to 10th July, 2010, at the Thyagaraj Stadium, Delhi is set to boost the popularity of the game in India. The tournament is a test event for the XIX Commonwealth Games 2010 Delhi.
Six countries, namely Thailand, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Hong Kong, Malaysia and India are participating in the event. Addressing
the press at the Thyagaraj Stadium, Mr. Gurbir Singh, President of the Netball Federation of India, said that the event would be a ‘great launch opportunity to educate the public on what the game is about.’ The tournament is open to girls 21 years of age and below.
Throwing light on the history of the game, he said that netball was conceived in 1892 as a sport especially for women, after basketball was conceived for men. It is in fact the only team game designed exclusively for women. India took up netball as far back as 1926.
The Indian team has been training hard and has made giant strides following funding from the Sports Authority of India and the Government of India. A core group of 22 players are training for Delhi 2010, while a team of 12 players have been selected for this tournament. India faces Thailand in their first match. Foreign coach, Mary Mercia Lourdes, from Sri Lanka is coaching the Indian girls. The training has been geared to give the girls plenty of global exposure, including training camps abroad and grooming their personalities.
Indian team captain Prachi Tehlan said that the XIX Commonwealth Games 2010 Delhi has helped in bringing good opportunities for the team members.
Genesis Global School and InterContinental Eros are the sponsors for the event.
Media entry for the event to be held from 3rd to 10th July, 2010, will be from Gate 3C and parking has been arranged in the grounds of Kendriya Vidyalaya and Sarvodya Vidyalaya.
