Varun saffronise National politics

He reached Pilibhit,the constituency which has more than 1.5 milion voters, on Saturday from Delhi,in midst of thousands of supporters raised slogans of Jai Sri Ram with saffron flags flying all over when Varun surrendered himself in the local court.Pilibhitt peoples following the road to the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate Vipin Kumar wherein Varun is booked under three charges.Election Commission with three FIRs against him charging him under sections 295(a), 505(ii), 153(a) and 188 of the IPC. First one is of charge promoting enmity between people on the basis of religion are non-bailable.

Varun's supporters running in thousand were in hours of pitched battles with police leaving over 20 injured. Maneka Gandhi, sitting MP from Pilibhit who visited the jail and met her son, said that 45 people were injured in police firing including 25 by a Muslim police inspector.

Varun, arrived here in the morning to a tumultuous welcome from a large number of BJP workers and saffron activists, was arrested and later remanded to judicial custody till Monday by Chief Judicial Magistrate Vipin Kumar. His bail plea will come up for hearing on Monday.

With brief court proceedings, the area around the district jail where he was taken, was turned into a battle zone with RSS activists of the Sangh Parivar attacking officials and attempting to block police from taking Gandhi to the jail.

Police fired rubber bullets and lathicharged the activists who indulged in heavy stone throwing. Police also returned the missiles and the situation was tense till late in the evening.

UP state government said in Lucknow that police used force to control the situation after BJP workers indulged in unprovoked violence. Chief Election Officer of Uttar Pradesh, Anuj Kumar Bisnoi, told newsperson in Lucknow on Saturday evening that the Election Commission is keeping a watch over the situation.BJP, however, said Mr. Varun Gandhi courting arrest is an act for law. The party spokesman Prakash Javdekar said, the law has been followed.

The CPI (M) Politburo member Sitaram Yechuri charged the BJP with trying to create communal unrest in Pilibhit over Varun Gandhi's recent remarks.The Pilibhit police have also lodged FIR against Varun’s supporters for violating the section 144. BJP leader and Varun’s mother Maneka Gandhi met him in the district jail on Saturday night.

Pyongyang army on altert: Asean news

North Korea put its army on high alert Monday as the United States and the South began their annual military exercises, increasing tensions in the region to their highest point in years.North Korea announced Friday that it is withdrawing from all political and military agreements with South Korea, accusing Seoul of pushing relations to the brink of war।

Kim Jong Il’s communist government also said that it was pushing ahead with the launch of a communications satellite, something that neighbouring countries worry could be cover for a missile test. North warned that any attempt to prevent the launch would be met with force. “Shooting our satellite for peaceful purposes will precisely mean war,” a North Korean military representative said.The North’s military was ordered to be “fully combat ready”, a manÅ“uvre downplayed by the South as “rhetoric”.

Gandhi memorabilia auction put off

shift priorities from military spending to health care for the poor to take the items off the auction, but Sharma said India has already taken several "broad initiatives" for the country's welfare.

With TV channel newsman talks to Tushar Gandhi, the great-grandson of Mahatma Gandhi who said, "I am happy auction has been called off but I am not sure when those items will come to India."

Indian oficial media PTI reports that the US-based owner of Mahatma Gandhi's five personal items including the iconic round eye glasses today decided to withdraw
from the controversial auction of the prized memorabilia hours before they were due to come under the hammer.Sources close to the US-based collector James Otis said he would be formally communicating to the New York-based Antiquorum Auctioneers that he would like to withdraw from the auction.

There was no immediate word from the Auctioneers who have maintained that the auction will take place as scheduled at 3 AM Friday (IST).The auctioneers are reported to be reluctant to pull the five items off the auction bloc at the last moment, sources said. Parleys are underway to resolve the issue.

Otis's Adviser Lester Kurtz was quoted by TV channels as saying that Gandhi's items were not up for auction.Otis' move came after intense negotiations between him and Indian diplomats at the Indian Consulate in New York.Otis earlier in the day set new conditions including that India shift priorities from military spending to health care especially for the poor if he has to call off the auction.

The Indian government stood firm in its response and rejected the conditions and was even prepared to bid for the items if required.It was not immediately known what will be the fate of the items that also included a pocket watch, a pair of sandals and a plate and bowl besids the rimmed glasses after Otis takes them back.
