Asif, Nawaz to work with president

Asif, Nawaz to work with president
Posted by Nksagar in ibibo news Nksagar on February 23, 2008 12:13:00 PM

The meetings, mainly of American and British ambassadors with the leaders of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N), have led to speculations about possible counsels to the makers of the future government to try to co-exist with Musharraf despite years of their mutual hostility.

No details have been available of the talks, except that matters about transition to democracy and counter-terrorism were among subjects discussed, indicating the West’s concerns about the future of Pakistan’s key role in the so-called war on terrorism of which the president is the architect.

US ambassador Anne W. Paterson on Friday had a second contact with PPP co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari within a few days, though this time accompanied by a Congressional delegation that earlier met President Musharraf.

British High Commissioner Robert Brinkley held a second meeting with Mr Sharif, only a day after the PML-N leader reiterated his hard line against the man who toppled him as prime minister in the Oct 12, 1999 coup, by telling a news conference that “sooner he (president) left the better”.

Washington’s known preference for a power-sharing between Musharraf and the PPP had led to the return of PPP leader Benazir Bhutto to Pakistan after about nine years of self-imposed foreign exile.
US Assistant Secretary of State Richard Boucher has warned not to make the assumption that President Pervez Musharraf will have no role in a future administrative set-up in Pakistan.

“I wouldn’t make that assumption … I would look at positions the parties are taking. And I would just be patient and wait,” said Mr Boucher when a reporter asked him why the US still talked about working with Mr Musharraf when most of the future government and new members of parliament appear unwilling to work with him.

Mr Boucher, who was in Brussels for biannual consultations with America’s European allies, made these remarks at a media roundtable.

A transcript released by the State Department in Washington on Friday quoted Mr Boucher as saying that as the process for selecting the new government in Pakistan continues, “We look forward to working with whoever emerges as prime minister and look forward to working with President Musharraf in his new role.”

He said that before making any assumption about President Musharraf’s role in the new set-up, “people will have to see how the whole thing settles out.”

Asked can the US envisage working with a government that does not have Mr Musharraf as its head, Mr Boucher said: “We can envisage working with a Pakistani government that is duly constituted, particularly through an election.” Mr Boucher said he would not like to envisage what role Mr Musharraf will have in the government, noting that “the division of powers between the president and prime minister is an issue in Pakistan.”

But any deal cut then was overtaken by Ms Bhutto’s Dec 27 assassination in a gun-and-bomb attack after she addressed a campaign rally in Rawalpindi and the rout of the previously ruling and pro-Musharraf Pakistan Muslim League in the elections, which left the two main winning parties the most sensible course of power-sharing between themselves rather than with those who will remain virtual political untouchables for now.

President Musharraf’s worries are not only about a constant ridicule across the country and increasing demands that he step aside, but also the commitment of opposition parties to clip the presidency of its sweeping powers without which he would remain just nominal head of state who must only act on the advice of a prime minister and not have the present authority to sack a prime minister, dissolve parliament and choose the heads of the armed forces.

The winning parties do not recognise President Musharraf’s controversial election for another term in October by a dying parliamentary college as valid, mainly on the ground that he blocked the hearing by a Supreme Court bench of challenges to his candidacy in army uniform by imposing an extra-constitutional emergency under which about 60 judges of the Supreme Court and provincial high courts were sacked for refusing or not being called to take oath under a Provisional Constitution Order.

While the winning political parties are ready to take a parliamentary course to deal with the aftermath of the emergency, the legal community has renewed its campaign for the restoration of the pre-Nov 3 judiciary, which could overturn the post-Nov 3 Supreme Court’s validation of the president’s candidacy.

The lawyers’ threat to organise a big march on Islamabad on March 9 if the pre-Nov 3 judiciary is not restored by then is likely to put the elected parties to test. These parties are unlikely to have formed a coalition government by that time but they will have to make a commitment to the lawyers and risk their honeymoon being spoiled by the lawyers’ agitation.

Experienced Yuvraj,Doni helps India win in Adelaide

Team India win in Adelaide against Sri Lanka have taken their points tally to 12 from six matches assume the second spot. Australia on top of the table with 17 from five matches has made his place in final but Sri Lanka have six from five games need to win against Australia on Friday to stay afloat in CB series.India needs another win to remain number two slot.

Captain Mahela Jayawardene won the toss and elected to bat Sangakkara steadied the innings after Sri Lanka lost openers Sanath Jayasuriya (0) and Tillakaratne Dilshan (4) on the bowling of Munaf Patel who gave India sound start picking up Dilshan in the first over and then got a run out in the third over to get rid of aggressive Jayasuriya.
Sangakkara 128 runs in 241 balls ,Jayawardene 71 runs in 171 balls held the fort with a valuable 153-run third-wicket partnership to sail their team out of the stormy situation and put on board 159/3 in 37.4 runs and Sangkara was out 48.6 over 234/5.
the islanders posted a competitive 238 for six largely built around Kumar Sangakkara's 128, the Indian batsmen overcame some anxious moments before overhauling the target with just five balls to spare in a keenly-contested floodlit encounter at the Adelaide Oval.

The Indians owed their win to Yuvraj who turned around his disastrous tour with a sumptuous 76 off 70 balls with 10 fours and a six which pulled the team out of a messy start.

No less remarkable was the sixth wicket pair of Dhoni and Pathan who shared a 58-run stand and brought Indians closer to victory.

The Indians still found themselves slipping into a quagmire when it lost three wickets and suddenly Sri Lanka were back in the match.

Pathan attempted a wild slog off Amarasinghe to leave India 216 for 6 in the 46th over and then young Praveen Kumar (6) and Harbhajan Singh (3) left with India still three runs short in the 49th over.

Ishant Sharma blocked the last two deliveries to deny Lasith Malinga any further success.
The first ball of the final over was a wide and then Dhoni steered one towards point boundary to scamper home for the required two runs.

It also completed Dhonis half century, a remarkable effort as the courageous youngster faced 68 balls without hitting a single four.

Chasing 239 to win under lights, India were staring at defeat at 35 for 3 before Yuvraj turned things around with an almost sublime innings.

The beleaguered Yuvraj Singh marked his return to form with a 70-ball 76 while captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni (50 not out), Irfan Pathan (31) and Rohit Sharma (24) were the other notable performers.

The victory has consolidated India's position for a place in the best-of-three finals and they need to win at least one of their remaining two matches to qualify for the summit showdown.

Australia were at the top of the points table with 17 points from five matches followed by India who have 12 points from as many matches.

MNS chief Raj Thackery was slapped with an FIR by Mumbai police two days ago for promoting enmity among regional groups after his provocative statements against North Indians.

Provocative utterances in secular and democratic state is tolerated with precision in diction but when the diction becomes an authority above law the radical state and fundamentalism emerge, the thin lining is difficult to draw. Development of each States must be done in such methodical way that the few metros donot get loaded with inflow of population is rational statement but when the native or Leader does not allow other state person free entry and see as foreigner in Federal structure of the country the intelligence of lower and higher reach mawkish debate. Each state with their intrinsic character with education levels and economic development has the role to assist other states for the country to overall growth of the country.Laconic speech is need of the hours from our Leaders but in the era of coalition and alliance which has love and hate relationship in politics, the lascivious sometime take over as the Parties try to gain in shortest route to achieve their object.Speech delivered by Raj states that Me Maharashtra”s Leader and not a National leader.
However Mumbai was by and large calm barring stray incidents of stone pelting in which some buses were targeted after the arrest just before the peak hour.

In Pune and Nashik, several buses were stoned by MNS activists.

Abu Asim Azmi of the Samajwadi party, who also faced similar charges like Raj, was also arrested from his Colaba home but granted bail by a Magistrate”s Court in Bhoiwada after furnishing a bond of Rs 10,000.

‘”The Congress government has given a long rope to Raj Thackeray. Its strategy is to divide the society for political gains,’” BJP spokesperson Prakash Javadekar told reporters in New Delhi.

Hamas, via Gaza’s new-found access to Egypt

Hamas via Gaza’s new-opened access at Gaza Egypt border makes way for Egyptian materials, goods and services, can now ease Gaza’s depressed economic condition, and thereby diminish the differences between Gaza and the more prosperous West Bank. Hundreds of thousands of Palestinians flooded the northeastern corner of the Sinai Peninsula after January 23, spending approximately $130 million in local Egyptian markets.

The opening of the state of Gaza to Egypt reinforces Hamas control that no external pressure will be able to reverse at this juncture. Abbas’s prospects of regaining control in Gaza are remote, at best. Notwithstanding reports of an agreement with Egypt to include Abbas’s Presidential Guard at Gaza’s Rafah border crossing, Hamas will not give up its achievement and allow forces loyal to Abbas to control the border, despite Egypt’s preference for such an arrangement.

Hamas has upgraded its strategic posture by opening its southern border and forcing its Egyptian neighbor to allow free and largely unimpeded access for nearly two weeks for hundreds of thousands of Gazans who crossed Egypt’s sovereign borders and returned to Gaza at will. Hamas’s success in forcing Egypt to negotiate over the crisis has upgraded its status.

Hamas has agreed to cooperate with Egypt to close the breached border. However, the gesture is temporary and must also be considered in the context of Hamas’s stated intention to disengage completely from Israel, abandon the shekel and adopt an Arab currency and seek fuel, utilities, trade and a new open border regime with Egypt.

Hamas - the Palestinian branch of the Muslim Brotherhood and the ideological precursor to al-Qaida - has gained full control over contiguous territory and population, and has now effectively become a state government without real opponents or internal challenges for power.

Gaza’s new open border with Egypt represents the fulfillment of a long-held dream by the Muslim Brotherhood across the region, and suggests far-reaching ramifications for neighboring Arab countries including Jordan, Syria and Egypt. In fact, on January 27, a senior Muslim Brotherhood delegation from the Egyptian parliament paid an official visit to Hamas’s government compound in Gaza.

A senior Hamas delegation headed by its political leader, Khaled Mashaal, has also been invited to Saudi Arabia to discuss “developments” since the border was opened.

In the Palestinian-Israeli context, Hamas’s success enhances its political power among Palestinians and further weakens Abbas’s image as the leader of the Palestinian people. While Abbas is eager to return Fatah control to Gaza, recent events have ratcheted up Hamas’s control.

Hamas’s border breach has also been a signal to Egypt of the Gaza government’s strength.

The events in Gaza may signal an historic change: the end of Fatah as the ruling political power in Palestinian society. Fatah’s continued control in Palestinian areas of the West Bank today is the direct result of the Israel Defense Forces’ control of the territory. Only the continuing IDF operations in the West Bank have prevented Hamas from staging a takeover similar to its military coup against Fatah in Gaza in 2007.

Another strategic shift is reflected in Gaza’s new status as an enemy state entity with open borders. Gaza has transformed from its prior status as part of the Palestinian Authority to its new role as a mini-state that is now an integral part of the Arab world. Hamas will now be able to more freely obtain weapons, ammunition, explosives and training via Egyptian Sinai. Since the border opening, advanced weapons have flowed unimpeded into Gaza across the Egyptian border, enabling the transfer of higher-grade weapons than can be smuggled via underground tunnels.

The Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency) has confirmed that Hamas smuggled large amounts of long-range rockets, anti-tank and anti-aircraft missiles into Gaza since the border was breached.

This new weaponry will enable the continued upgrade of Hamas’s highly disciplined army that is largely financed and trained by Iran and is modeled after the Iranian-backed Hizbullah in Lebanon.

Terrorist operatives and groups such as al-Qaida, that have already used Egyptian Sinai as a rear base, are now able to reach Gaza more easily. Several al-Qaida-affiliated operatives, some of which infiltrated from Egypt, Sudan, and Yemen, have been active in Gaza since 2006. Over time, al-Qaida-affiliated organizations have also emerged in Gaza, including Jaish al-Islam (Army of Islam) that was responsible for the kidnapping of BBC journalist Alan Johnston. Other groups were also formed like Jaish al-Umma (Army of the Nation), al-Qaida in Palestine, and Mujahidin Beit al-Makdes (Holy Warriors of Jerusalem), which attacked the American International School in Gaza last month.

Global jihadi leaders, such as Abu Abd al-Rahman al-Ansari of the Lebanese-based Fatah al-Islam, called for jihadi fighters around the world to exploit the breached Rafah crossing and enter Gaza.

Russia stops counter-terrorist operation in Ingushetia

MOSCOW, February 3 - A counter-terrorist operation launched in the Republic of Ingushetia January 25 due to the threat of an imminent large-scale terrorist attack has been terminated, the operation's headquarters said Sunday.

Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) earlier said it had received information indicating that "terrorists had been preparing a series of attacks on administrative buildings, police and citizens in public places on the territory of Ingushetia."

"The headquarters has made a decision to terminate at 4:00 p.m. on February 3 the counter-terrorist operation launched on January 25, 2008. Measures and temporary restrictions introduced in Ingushetia have been lifted," the statement said.

Ingushetia is located in the Russian North Caucasus, and neighbors the troubled Chechen Republic, site of two devastating separatist wars since the break up of the U.S.S.R in 1991. While both republics have been plagued by attacks on police and authorities, as well as militant raids, violence has steadily escalated in recent months in Ingushetia.

Heightened security measures during the counter-terrorist operation in Ingushetia included ID checks and restricted public and transport movement. The main districts included in the "counter-terrorist operation zone" were Ingushetia's largest city Nazran and the capital Magas.

On January 9, in Ingushetia, gunmen opened automatic gunfire and launched grenades at two police cars carrying six police officers, killing one senior officer and wounding another. A police officer was later killed by unknown gunmen in the republic on January 16.

On January 17, a gun and grenade attack in Nazran reportedly targeted the home of republic's prime minister. Russia's FSB Director Nikolai Patrushev was attending a meeting of the National Antiterrorism Committee in Magas at the time of the attack.

The government of the volatile republic has repeatedly said the attacks were linked to a crackdown on criminal groups and were an attempt to destabilize the region in the run up to the March 2 Russian presidential elections.
